Building a New Feedlot
This video covers the construction of a new section to our feedlot to handle a growing number of weaned calves. With plans to increase capacity by about 500 head, the expansion ensures that feeder cattle remain in a centralized location for easier sorting, feeding, and weight management. The video highlights the importance of proper drainage to keep pens dry and comfortable, reducing stress and health risks for the cattle.
The video also discusses the economic reasoning behind feedlot operations. Instead of selling hay at low market prices, the ranchers maximize profits by using it to feed cattle and increase their weight before selling. Additionally, the seasonal flow of livestock in and out of the feedlot is explained, showing how different types of cattle—calves, feeder cattle, and bulls—rotate through the system depending on their stage of growth and market conditions.
