Building a New Silage Pit to Store Feed for Our Cattle

This video documents the construction of a new silage pit designed for long-term feed storage. Previously, the ranch stored silage in large plastic bags, but this method led to excessive waste and labor challenges. The new pit, built with asphalt and cement walls, will hold up to 6,000 tons of silage. With 10-foot-high walls and a 300-foot length, it allows for tighter packing and improved anaerobic fermentation, essential for preserving silage quality.

One of the main advantages of this system is its sustainability. Unlike plastic-wrapped storage, which requires constant replacement, the concrete structure will last for years. The team also explains the process of packing silage tightly to exclude oxygen, preventing spoilage while ensuring optimal nutrition for cattle. By investing in this infrastructure, the ranch enhances efficiency, reduces costs, and creates a more environmentally friendly approach to feed storage.
