Caring For Our New Foals
This video provides an inside look at the care and management of newborn foals at Canon Ranch. The equine manager explains the essential steps taken right after birth, including ensuring the foal is nursing and monitoring the mare’s health. Proper nutrition and early human interaction play a key role in developing well-mannered and trainable horses. At about one month old, foals begin light halter training and handling to familiarize them with human interaction.
As these horses mature, they are trained for various ranch tasks, such as working cattle, roping, and traveling long distances in rugged terrain. Selecting the right breeding stock is crucial, with a focus on endurance, intelligence, and cow sense. The video highlights the gradual training process, from foal handling to saddle work at age two, ensuring that these horses become valuable assets to ranch operations.
